Notes

Continents and Countries / Europe / France Functioning - context France plays a leading role in the organization and codification of "weights", as it was called. It is to the Lille native Edmond Desbonnet, promoter of physical culture, who in 1885 we owe the classification of records. The foundation of the international federation in 1920 was marked by the remarkable work of its first president: Jules Rosset. In addition to the institutionalised practice (world championship), personalities of the calibre of Yves Le Boulanger (1879-1954), alias Yves Coudray, nicknamed "king of the pincer" in Parisian circles between the two world wars, contributed to the popularity of the discipline outside the competition halls. The street became for him the field of spectacle. The man who was also affectionately nicknamed "La Boulange" by the public walked the streets of Paris to deliver a show where his power was extraordinary. His specialty: Herculean strength in the wrists and especially in the fingers.
