Notes

The Freedom tableau of the Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opens with the masked torchbearer, he plunges into the bowels of the Théâtre du Chatelet to take part in the painting "Liberty Leading the People" by Eugène Delacroix, at the heart of an excerpt from the musical Les Misérables, based on Victor Hugo's masterpiece. Having finally arrived in front of the Conciergerie, a red Marie Antoinette, her head in her hands, sings "Ah! It'll be fine! ", Revolutionary song, composed in 1790, on the occasion of the first celebration of 14 July, at the time called the Fête de la Fédération. The painting Liberty obviously evokes the French Revolution. At the windows of this concierge service are a multitude of Marie-Antoinettes. Higher up, we find the members of the group Gojira who take over the musical relay once Marie-Antoinette has finished her chorus. Gojira was the first metal band to play at an opening ceremony. They are joined by opera singer Marina Viotti. She sang to the tune of L'amour est un oiseau rebelle, the part of "Ça ira" proclaiming "rejoice, the good weather will come". It is installed on a sailing boat, one of the emblems of the coat of arms of Paris, recalling the city's motto "Fluctuat nec mergitur": it is beaten by the waves and does not sink. Some Internet users have, beyond the revolution, seen, through the painting Liberté, a tribute to the victims of November 13, 2015, and in particular to those of the Bataclan, who lost their lives while going to the concert of the "Eagles of Death Metal". However, this nod has not been confirmed by the Paris 2024 teams.
