Notes
Born in 1867 into a well-to-do family in Lille, Edmond Desbonnet was at the end of the nineteenth century the claimed inventor of the term "physical culture" and the creator and promoter of a bodybuilding method that bears his name. While the latter's ultimate ambition is to "elevate the soul by developing the body" and to participate in the development of sport for all in order to "regenerate the race", it also attaches particular importance to health and plastic beauty.
